The Lorraine region is the only French region that borders three different countries – Luxemburg, Belgium and Germany; it also benefits from a prime location at the heart of the European dynamic and the world’s biggest market. 50% of total European GDP, 200 million consumers, 6 European capital cities, and 10 major cities are all situated within a 600 kilometer radius around the Lorraine region. The region also offers an exceptional transport and communications network at a crossroads in continental traffic flows that was recently enhanced by the launch of the TGV East high speed train link.
The Lorraine region has four departments and 3 major cities with populations of over 100 000. The region offers a supply of space for new industrial and tertiary activities. The region also offers a high and diverse capacity for research and innovation which is supported by several clusters, including two officially registered clusters: the “Innovative materials and Intelligent products” cluster, and the “Fiber” cluster, which attract major development projects.
The Lorraine is the fourth leading region in terms of business creations, and the seventh leading region in terms of exports; it offers high level educational opportunities with a wide range of diverse and efficient training programs that enhance the availability of a multi-lingual and competent workforce, within a quality social environment. Thanks to its rich and active economic environment, the region has approximately 80 000 companies and establishments, 25 000 artisans and employs a total of 72 440 people.
The region is international by nature, and its economic attractiveness is obvious: it has 721 foreign companies and, for the past 10 years, has been ranked among the leading regions in France in terms of the number of jobs resulting from international investment inflows.
