Situated to the north-east of South America, between Surinam and Brazil, Guyana has a surface area of 91 000 km² (the equivalent of Portugal) and has a population of 200 000 concentrated along the coastline and the major border rivers.

Guyana has 4 500 companies, 39 of which have more than 50 employees and 17 more than 100 employees. The services sector alone represents almost two thirds of the major companies in the region, the industrial sector accounting for only 8 companies, 3 of which operate in the construction sector.
Since 2004, a five-year experimental scheme for regional economic development has been set up to coordinate action in favor of economic development, promote balanced regional economic development and develop the region’s economic attractiveness.
