France's Winning Cards to Beat the Crisis

France has been responding to the crisis better than its neighbors.  Here are seven reasong why, according to L'Express.

Agriculture  France is the leading agricultural producer in Europe.  World's leading exporter of transformed products, employing 1.3 million people in the sector, generating more than 9.3 billion Euros.

DemographicsBetween 1998 and 2007, the French population grew from 58.4 to 61,8 million. An undeniable sign of growth.

Social ProgramsFamily allocations, retirement, unemployment, healthcare, growing minimum wage - all of these programs have played a role in combatting the effects of the economic crisis and ensuring national cohesion.

Industry ChampionsOil (Total), yogurt (Danone), insurance (Axa), beauty (L'Oréal), beverages (Pernod Ricard) and luxury (LVMH): three quarters of the companies on France's stock exchange, the CAC 40, appear among the Global 500.

Infrastructure
The quality and expanse of France's infrastructure is unbeatable - with 2,000 kilometers of high-speed railway tracks, 2,000 kilometers of navigable waterways and 10,500 kilometers of highways. Plans for four additional high-speed lines are in the works.

Nuclear EnergyStill the country's major pillar of national energy independence. EDF and Areva lead the industry worldwide.

Quality of Life
In 2007, for the second year in a row, France was ranked by International Living as the country with the highest standard of living. Some of its winning criteria were a mild climate, its countryside, low cost of living, incomparable food and wine, culture and safety.  The magazine also recognized Paris as the most beautiful and romantic of cities.
