Frédérique Segond, Principal Scientist, Xerox Research Centre Europe
What activities does Xerox have in France ?
Xerox’s research & development activities in France began in 1993, when the group opened a site at Meylan, near Grenoble, to steer its European research activities. Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE) co-ordinates research and engineering activities, and also the TeXnology showroom, which is a showcase of Xerox research and a technology exchange forum. Among other things, we are currently working on the theme of natural language, in order to anticipate and create documentary systems for the future. Our work was even approved in 2004… by IFA, which awarded Xerox the Innovate in France Award, in recognition of our commitment and our investment in France.
How and why did Xerox join the Cap Digital cluster ?
As far as Xerox was concerned, becoming part of the Cap Digital cluster was a natural step, due to the similarity of our research & development topics: images, text, interactivity, IT, video games, etc.
XRCE, which has been located close to Grenoble for 15 years, is responsible for developing links within the European scientific community by means of collaborative projects and partnerships. We have taken part in several high-tech initiatives in France and the local area, which is now known as the French Silicon Valley.
Working with the Cap Digital cluster covering topics similar to our own was an obvious choice for us.
What advantages does the Cap Digital cluster offer for Xerox ?
Cap Digital enables Xerox to collaborate both with the scientific community and other companies, but also to create synergies with other players in the R&D field.
In terms of R&D, Cap Digital allows Xerox to remain innovative, which means developing research today, in order to offer new services tomorrow. Not only does Cap Digital provide access to more projects but it also enables us to anticipate the future by exploring new fields of application. The projects steered by the Cap Digital cluster not only allow us to foster partnerships with research players in related fields, but also to test new ideas: in this respect, Xerox is better able to anticipate and provide services for the future.
