> French excellence in mathematics honored by two new Fields Medals
Two Frenchmen, Cédric Villani and Ngo Bao Chau, have been awarded the prestigious Fields Medal (equivalent to the Nobel Prize for mathematics) at the opening of the 2010 International Mathematics Conference.
 
The event attracts over 3,000 researchers from around the world and goes until August 27 in Hyderabad, in central India.

The French Research Minister, Valérie Pécresse, hailed these accolades as “yet another sign of the excellence of French mathematics research.
 
Out of the 52 Fields Medals awarded since 1936, 11 have gone to the French – making France the second most honored country after the United States (13 medals).
